GURU CRAFTS & DESIGN FAIR XANTICO GALLERY

Cornette de Saint Cyr
2021

11th – 16 Sep 2021

By François Epin & Susana Ordovas & Graziella Semerciyan

Aurelie Hoegy x Xantico Gallery will be presenting Wild Fibers Coffee table piece during Guru Design & Crafts Fair for Paris Design Week.

Taking place during Paris Design Week, Guru Craft & Design Fair showcases collections of contemporary design including jewellery, objects and furniture which are spread across the three floors of a 19th-century mansion, Cornette Saint Cyr, avenue Hoche, Paris.

With the aim of giving visibility, promoting and positioning Mexico’s contemporary decorative arts in the European market, the Spanish journalist specialised in interior design, Susana Ordovas, and the French auctioneer specialised in design, François Epin have joined forces and their common passion for the Latin American country to create XANTICO Gallery.

Taking its name from the Aztec goddess of fire and volcanoes, protector of precious personal treasures, XANTICO is a contemporary design gallery focused on representing a new generation of artists, designers and artisans with a proposal that pays tribute to the heritage of traditional techniques and materials immersed in the current effervescent creative scene of Mexico, a country famous for its unique design identity.

XANTICO gives continuity to the valorization of the artisanal object outside of a folkloric context, recognizing under a strict principle of cultural respect its exceptional artistic value and perpetuating a unique know-how that has been transmitted from generation to generation and is in danger of disappearing. Mexican handcraft is seen through a contemporary lens that focuses on highlighting its roots and culture for an international audience, without losing its identity.

The hands behind the pieces play a central role in XANTICO’s philosophy, which prioritises the human ethical factor and fair trade with the artisans and cultural organizations with which it collaborates. The pieces that comprise the gallery’s portfolio enhance the handcraft and aesthetic of the Aztec country, but with a modern and current design. The selection criteria is based on three pillars consisting of: artists who utilise organic materials and transform them with their technical expertise into design objects, designers who reinterpret the pre-Hispanic identity with a modernist aesthetic, and master craftsmen who produce vernacular pieces from their region that are not widely known outside Mexico.
