Oui Design! 2024 Spotlighting French Savoir-Faire During NYCXDESIGN

French artisans and designers have a truly unique skill set— combining savoir-faire thats been refined over centuries with an innovative approach to sustainability and new materials, says Mia Fierberg of Villa Albertine, a unique organization creating a network for arts and ideas spanning France and the United States. Given that New York City is home to the largest number of French design professionals outside of France itself, Villa Albertines Oui Design! is intended to be a real celebration of that excellence, and a tribute to the ongoing collaboration between our French and American communities, which only continues to grow.

Villa Albertine announces the second edition of Oui Design!, a curated path of open studios, workshops, designer talks and exclusive events with some of New York Citys most exceptional French design spaces and makers.

The festival returns in an even larger format this year to celebrate the rich tradition of collaboration between the French and American design scenes. From May 15 to 21, during the NYCxDESIGN Festival, Oui Design! will feature 30 of the citys top design galleries and workshops, with work by dozens of established and emerging French makers, advancing Villa Albertines mission to deepen the dialogue and cultural connections between French and American creative communities.

Studio Gohard opens their doors and invite the Spaceless Gallery to showcase the symbiosis of the Arts and Crafts in a spectacular environment.

For the first time, Studio Gohard, under the artistic direction of its newly appointed creative director, Axel Huynh, opens its doors and invites the Spaceless Gallery to exhibit French renowned and emerging artist designers Aurélie Hoegy and aurèce vettier during New York Design Week.

A living heritage company and family-owned for more than 60 years, Ateliers Gohard has been passionately creating exceptional finishes within the high luxury interior decoration world worldwide. On the occasion of NYCxDESIGN Week, Ateliers Gohard opens a new chapter, launching its Studio and interior design brand under the visionary direction of designer Axel Huynh. Former Jean-Paul Gaultier Model, Creative Director, Scenographer, and Emotion Distiller, Axel Huynh’s creative inspiration knows no boundaries. With major signatures of iconic Parisian powerhouses such as Hotel Mona Bismarck, the American Center of Arts in Paris, and La Galerie Bourbon, the autodidact designer leaves a mark on Design & Lifestyle with his singular style. Acclaimed by Architectural Digest for his latest design project for Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank and her unique Left Bank Parisian home.

From art curation to sourcing for interior designers and private collectors, the Spaceless Gallery is a nomadic art gallery with a global presence in Paris, New York, and Miami. Recent exhibition collaborations include partnerships with prestigious entities such as Bergdorf Goodman, the Invisible Collection in New York, Gilles & Boissier, and Veronese in Paris. Rather than confining itself to conventional gallery spaces, the Spaceless Gallery strives to contextualize art in diverse environments, curating exhibitions that engage with their surroundings. It is with great excitement that the Spaceless Gallery will inaugurate Ateliers Gohard’s gallery space, drawing on Art, Design, Minimalism, and great talent.

Aurélie Hoegy captivates with her skillful manipulation of rattan, a material typically overlooked, to produce extraordinary pieces that serve both form and function. Through her innovative approach, she transforms this humble material into something truly exceptional, seamlessly blending natural fibers with contemporary design to achieve a harmonious fusion. Her work is collected among important public and private collections such as the Centre Pompidou and will be exhibited for the first time in New York at l’Ateliers Gohard.

aurèce vettier’s ‘Prothèses d’Arbres’ series offers a glimpse into a futuristic realm where craftsmanship meets AI and nature. vettier explores the convergence of nature and technology with unparalleled poetry. Collaborating with Ateliers Gohard, vettier has made for the NYCxDESIGN Week exquisite sculptures infused with the finest guild craftsmanship.

This exhibition marks a pivotal moment as these recognized French artists make their debut in New York, celebrating the imaginative intersection of art, craftsmanship, and innovation at Ateliers Gohard. This exhibition has been supported by Oui Design!, a program of Villa Albertine, Albertine Foundation, and Mobilier National, with the support of Institut français.

International Spotlight

French design by (clockwise from top left) Ateliers Courbet, Aurelie Hoegy, Ronan Bouroullec, Jean-luc Le Mounier at Maison Gerard.

« While French design has long been synonymous with luxury, even some design enthusiasts may not be up to date on the many innovations emerging from the French design scene. But the nations connection to historic techniques and unwavering quality is part of the recipe that makes contemporary French design so cutting edge. French culture is generally well represented in the New York scene. Note significant art exhibitions—from the medieval to the contemporary—among our world- class museum collections. Whats more, the nations contributions to literature, philosophy and even dance are well represented at the citys learning and performing arts institutions. Mia Fierberg, on behalf of the French Embassy, tells us she thinks that French design and craftsmanship deserve to be similarly recognized. For example, eminent American architects including Peter Marino, Gensler, and Ingrao are all working closely with French creators on major projects.

NYC being home to the largest number of French design professionals outside of France means that voices representing the spirit of French design are already a part of our vibrant design community. But during NYCxDESIGN, Villa Albertines Oui Design! will highlight 30 of the citys top design galleries and workshops—including work by dozens of established and emerging French makers. For the first time this year, they will also host a cohort of up- and-coming artisans traveling from France with the support of Albertine Grants. These grantees, selected through a competitive application process, will participate in a week-long immersion in the NYC scene to gain a better understanding of the ecosystem and build connections for future opportunities. Grantees will also lead demonstrations of their crafts at Oui Design! Résonance on May 17th, 4pm–11pm.

Presented by Villa Albertine and Mobilier national in association with Par Excellence, Oui Design! Résonance will be an interactive evening hosted by Ateliers Jouffre. The event will highlight the know-how of six emerging French craftspeople. Live craft demonstrations will immerse visitors in a range of historic and contemporary skills including marquetry, embroidery, cabinetmaking and textile design. This will be followed by a reception and disco with cocktails and a DJ set.

People tend to think of Olympic years as great showcases for the international identity of all participating nations, but that may be most true of the host nation. Of course were very excited for the Olympics this year, as

Paris will be hosting, adds Fierberg. And while the focus at NYCxDESIGN may lean more toward collaboration than competition, NYCxDESIGN has plenty in common with the Olympics. To a certain extent, we aim for Oui Design! to also function as a forum and host for intercultural exchange and future collaboration.

By what metric, then, will Villa Albertine’s Oui Design! measure the fruits of their efforts for NYCxDESIGN 2024? Fierberg explains that “the markers of success will be everywhere—from increased visibility for French galleries and artisans among American architects and interior designers to new ideas discussed over a workbench and future partnerships toasted with a glass of champagne. »  Grid Official Guide NYC Design Week.
